Hair Care and Styling Tips for Your Pocketlings Doll

Your Pocketlings doll's hair is one of her most special features — textured, natural, and beautiful. Here's how to care for it and style it with love.

The Pocketlings Team

One of the most special things about your Pocketlings doll is her hair. Rich, textured, natural, and beautiful — her hair is designed to reflect the same gorgeous range of natural hair types that Black children and families know and celebrate every day. And just like natural hair, it deserves a little care and attention to keep it looking its best.

This guide walks you through everything you need to keep your doll's hair happy, healthy, and ready for adventures.

Why Doll Hair Care Matters

We designed our dolls' hair with care because hair is culture. For so many Black families, hair care is an act of love — a bonding ritual between parent and child, a tradition passed down through generations, a quiet daily affirmation that your natural texture is worth tending to with care and pride.

When a child learns to care for their doll's natural hair, they are also learning to care for their own. They are absorbing the message — woven into the ritual itself — that their hair is beautiful, that it deserves time and tenderness, and that maintaining it is not a burden but a joy. This is why we took the design of Pocketlings' hair so seriously. And it is why we want to help you make hair care a wonderful part of your child's play.

Basic Care Routine

Gentle Detangling

Always detangle your doll's hair starting from the ends and working your way up toward the roots — never top to bottom, which creates unnecessary breakage and tangles.

Use your fingers first to gently separate any larger knots. Then use a wide-tooth comb to work through the hair in small sections. Be patient and gentle. If you encounter resistance, stop and work the section loose with your fingers before continuing with the comb.

Moisture is Key

Natural hair thrives with moisture. If your doll's hair feels dry or stiff, lightly mist it with clean water from a small spray bottle. This softens the hair and makes it much easier to style. You do not need any product — just a little water goes a long way.

Storage Tips

When your doll is not being played with, store her in a way that protects her hair. A simple loose protective style — a low bun, two-strand twists, or two loose braids — will help maintain the hair's shape and reduce tangling between play sessions.

Fun Styling Ideas to Try

The best part! Your child can try these styles with adult supervision. Each one is simple enough for little hands learning to style, and beautiful enough to make Adaeze, Amara, or Zara feel like the star she is.

Pom-Pom Puffs

Gather the hair into two equal sections and secure each with a small elastic band (be sure to use one that isn't too tight). Gently fluff each puff with your fingers until it's round and full. Puffs are classic, joyful, and take about two minutes to achieve. This is a wonderful first style for young children to try.

Crown Braids

Divide the hair into four sections — two at the front, two at the back. Braid each section in a simple three-strand braid and secure at the ends. For the front braids, gently bring them back and tuck or clip them to create a crown effect. This style photographs beautifully and stays neat during even the most adventurous play.

Two-Strand Twists

Take a small section of hair and divide it into two. Wrap each strand around the other in the same direction all the way down, securing at the end with a small band. Repeat across the whole head. Twists are wonderful for preserving moisture overnight and look elegant and intentional.

Tools That Work Well

  • Wide-tooth comb: Your most important tool. Essential for detangling without damage.
  • Small spray bottle with clean water: For adding moisture before styling.
  • Soft-bristle brush: Good for smoothing flyaways and adding polish to a finished style.
  • Small elastic hair ties (snag-free): For securing styles. Avoid tight rubber bands.
  • Your fingers: Honestly, the best detangling tool for the first pass.

Hair as Cultural Pride

Every curl, every coil, every twist on your Pocketlings doll's head is a celebration. We made this doll's hair intentionally — to reflect the beautiful diversity of natural Black hair and to give children a doll they could genuinely see themselves in.

We hope that the time you and your child spend caring for this doll's hair becomes its own small tradition. A moment to slow down, to be together, to talk about hair and heritage and beauty in all its forms. That conversation, had softly over a comb and a spray bottle, is part of what Pocketlings is about.

Every strand is gorgeous. Just like yours.
